Public and private industries are obligated to uphold federal environmental law by handling toxic chemicals and
waste responsibly. If an environmental law or guideline is ignored, industries run the risk of causing
environmental contamination, sickening or injuring many people. The lawyers at McCallion & Associates are proud of
their commitment to punish those who disregard New York and federal environmental law.
Environmental Contaminant Exposure
Ingestion or exposure to toxic waste, a pesticide, or poisonous chemical may lead to a lifetime of health problems,
including:
» Lung, brain, and/or kidney cancers, leukemia and/or lymphoma
» Learning disabilities and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
» Birth defects when the mother is exposed during or before pregnancy
» Breathing difficulties, allergies, and other respiratory conditions
» Stomach, heart, kidney, and liver difficulties
» Nervous system disorders, such as headaches and reflex disorders
Environmental Pollution
Air Pollution
There are many forms of environmental pollution, and urban areas like New York
are often plagued by air pollution. Air pollution leads to respiratory illness and cancer and often stems
from excessive traffic, heating/coolants, gasoline, and industrial chemicals/solvents. Some contributors
to soil contamination include heavy metals, industrial waste and chemicals. It is essential to avoid skin
contact, inhalation and ingestion of contaminated dust and soil whenever possible.
Water Pollution
Considering the amount of water humans consume daily, one of the biggest environmental health threats is
contaminated water. Toxic waste dumps, landfills, septic systems/cesspools, and agricultural runoff are
just a few culprits, and in the event that ground water becomes polluted, the contaminants can remain there
for thousands of years. If you or a loved one was sickened by exposure to environmental contamination in New York or anywhere else in the country,
you may be entitled to damages. Contact the environmental law attorneys at McCallion & Associates
immediately.
Common Environmental Contamination Sites
If you have any preexisting health conditions, it is important to avoid locations that are sites of
environmental safety breaches. Some vulnerable areas in New York include:
» Gas stations
» Machine shops
» Railroad yards
» Chemical plants
» Dry cleaning stores
» Chemical waste storage facilities
» Oil refineries
» Landfills
Preventing the spread of insects, plants, animals, and microorganisms often
dictates the use of a pesticide, but frequent pesticide exposure can lead to serious health problems.
Kaiser Permanente and Stanford University recently joined efforts to study the relationship between
pesticide use and Parkinson's disease. The results strongly support the longtime suspicion that pesticide
exposure significantly increases the risk of Parkinson's disease. Children are particularly vulnerable to
pesticide exposure because they use their mouths as a primary sensory tool. It is of utmost importance to keep
all pesticides and household chemicals out of the reach of children.
Beyond using pesticides in home gardens and houseplants, people encounter these chemicals when they purchase produce from grocery stores. Simply rinsing fruits and vegetables before consumption does not necessarily remove a pesticide;
it is essential to carefully wash all produce prior to consumption. If you have fallen victim to illness due
to pesticide exposure and would like to review your case, contact McCallion & Associates team of pesticide
lawyers today.
Pesticide Prevalence
Atrazine, 2,4-D, and Paraquat are three potentially dangerous pesticides. Atrazine is a weed-killing pesticide
frequently sprayed on corn that has caused increased prostate cancer in manufacturing plant workers. 2,4-D is
often touted as a "safe" pesticide, but it has reportedly lead to increased cancer, fetal and birth defects, liver
and kidney damage, leukemia, and tumors. Paraquat has caused damage to respiratory, circulatory and muscle health;
it has also been linked to brain and heart disorders.
If you have become ill as a result of chemical or pesticide exposure, please contact the
